"Regnum-Irae" and "Oppressa Resurgit"
The Regnum-Irae and Oppressa Resurgit motto explained
Oppressa Resurgit is Latin for "The Oppressed Will Rise Again". Regnum Irae adopted the phrase not so much for its literal meaning as for the tradition and honor that it carries.
"Oppressa Resurgit" is an original motto of the Knights Templar and their predecessors the Normandy Knights. As early as the tenth century an order called the Joms-Vikings appeared in Scandinavia, restricted to warriors of proven bravery who submitted to a harsh discipline and tests of skill. Death in battle was their ambition. The traditions of this northern war-band were very much alive in the twelfth century and the Chansons de Geste expressed the same ideals: physical prowess, the joy of plunder and the duty of revenge.
The concepts of 'duty of revenge' and 'never surrender' can be found in the latin translation of Regnum-Irae, which literally The Realms Of Wrath.
"Wrath" implies the 'duty of revenge' in the case of 'attack' against Regnum-Irae.
The original Knights Templar were nine knights charged with protecting pilgrims enroute to the Holy Land in the year 1118. King Baldwin allowed these knights to build their quarters on the Temple Mount.
The camaraderie and honor of these original Knights lives on today in Regnum Irae. Members have the duty of protecting players traveling within the games we play, whether they are in RI or not. Regnum-Irae provides organization, friendship and training. They ask in return loyalty, honor and brotherhood, in the same tradition as the Knights in whose tradition they follow.
